Hmm.

So, I recently heard (haven’t verified) that composers like Bach, Beethoven and Mozart didn’t produce a higher percentage of “hits” than lesser-known composers. They were just prolific. And usually their favorite compositions were not the public’s favorite.

You’re writing prolifically, check. But I think you’re missing the mark about what and when you should pitch to Quillette & Areo. You sound as if you want to pitch only heartbreaking works of staggering genius. To that I challenge you: 1) are all, most or even plurality of the articles you read in those publications heartbreaking works of staggering genius? (no); 2) are all, most or even a plurality of articles you read in these publications profound and/or unique & beautiful snowflakes? (no); 3) are you the best judge of what work of yours is staggering genius and/or will have massive appeal to others (if you’re like the composers, then no).

IMO you should just submit some articles to these guys, and/or show them your existing work and ask what type of articles they’d be interested in you writing for them. The startup world has adopted Lean, which in our context means mostly “get your product in front of your prospective customers as soon as you possibly can; if you’re not embarrassed by it, you’ve waited too long.” The reason: you NEED the feedback from your target customers/users/readers to create something of value. You, the artist/designer/coder/writer, is not your own user. Plus, creators tend to be demented about their own work (I certainly am and TBH you sound like you have a bit of the same disorder :-)). Now, you’re doing awesomely by writing on Medium and getting good engagement. But if you’re ultimate intention is to write for Quillettes and Areos, then the sooner and more frequently you get stuff in front of them, the more efficient you’ll be in “getting there.”

Anyway, I’m not going to endlessly debate you about whether or not your work is good enough to get into those publications. I’ve made my position clear :-) Do as you will, and good luck regardless of what path you take!
